ANNOUNCEMENTS

From Our PTO Co-Presidents

DES families,

It finally feels like fall!  Thank you to Leah Marques for helping coordinate DES picture day.  Everyone looked great and had such nice smiles!  We hope that everyone has a wonderful fall break with your family and friends.  Remember there is no school October 10th - October 14th.  We will see you back at DES on Tuesday October 15th.

We’re only TEN DAYS AWAY from kicking off the Dunwoody Tiger Challenge fundraiser! This year, our goal is to raise $50,000 for Chromebooks and classroom technology and Boosterthon has guaranteed DES $40,000. Last year, we raised $64,000, and this year we want to raise even more to help Dunwoody Elementary School. We can’t wait to have fun with our students as we help our school!

BOOSTERTHON FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  1. What is the Obstacle Challenge?
The Obstacle Challenge is a 9-day program and is this semester’s biggest fundraiser.  Families will be getting pledges for the obstacles their student complete at the challenge. Funds raised from this event go toward Chromebooks and classroom technology!
  2. How can parents register their student(s)?
First, parents log in or sign up on FUNRUN.COM. Then, parents can register their student as a participant on FUNRUN.COM by searching for the school by name.
  3. How can students get pledges?
Parents can help connect students to sponsors by sharing their pledge link on Facebook, through email, or even a text. Sponsors can enter those pledges online through your student’s pledge link.
  4. Can students receive a prize for flat donations?
Yes! All flat donations count toward pledges and are rounded by 30 (the average student will complete over 30 obstacles). So, a $30 donation is the same as $1 per obstacle. A $60 donation is the same as $2 per obstacle, etc.
  5. What if families don’t have Internet?
If a student’s family does not have Internet access, parents and families can use the Pledgebook to record all pledges. If students turn their Pledgebook into their teacher, please make sure student and teacher name are listed on the front.
  6. Can sponsors pay for pledges online?
YES! Sponsors have the option to pay online and pay immediately. Only pledges that have an email address entered with the pledge can be paid online. Make sure sponsors know they should enter a valid email address. The day after the Obstacle Challenge, sponsors will receive an email with payment options if they have not yet paid.
  7. When is the pledge money due?
Pledge money is due on November 1st. Families have one week to collect their pledges after the Obstacle Challenge
  8. How is money collected?
Families will call their sponsors to let them know how many obstacles their student(s) completed. All students will get an envelope to organize cash and checks and bring back to school (if sponsors don’t pay online). All checks are made out to: DES PTO.

Reading Bowl

We are looking for 4th- and 5th-grade students who love to read! The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB) is a fun, quiz-bowl type competition, where students strive to correctly answer questions about the current year's Georgia Book Award nominees faster than the opposing teams.

Ms. Gurin and Mrs. Mach will sponsor an after-school club based on the Bowl for 4th and 5th graders. Members will read and discuss the nominated books.

Ten reading bowl club members will be selected to represent Dunwoody Elementary at the HRRB on January 25, 2020. Club meetings will be on Mondays in the media center from 2:20-3:00pm. A sign-up sheet is located outside of the Media Center. Happy reading!!!

Congratulations to Megan Cann and Merrie Burton, the August and September PTO Volunteers of the Month! Both will receive a gift certificate to Painting with a Twist - the sponsor of the DES Volunteer of the Month.

The PTO Volunteer of the Month is the person with the most hours logged in the Membership Toolkit. Please make sure to log your volunteer hours so you can be a winner too! It is even more important to log your hours, no matter how many, as the school uses them for reporting for grants and other needs.

Thank you to Megan and Merrie for all your time and support - and to all of the parents and volunteers at Dunwoody Elementary School!

 Log Those October Hours!

The Media Center needs volunteers Monday - Friday anytime after 10am!

Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:10-7:40am.

This is a great opportunity to get to know the staff and many of the kids before the work day even begins. The success of our school store is entirely dependent on volunteers and works best for everyone when we have two volunteers at each shift. Please consider signing up for one of the shifts at the following link: https://dunwoodypto.membershiptoolkit.com/volunteer/14418

Melanie or Emily will be at the store every shift so you will not be working alone.

For questions, please contact:

Help with Lunch Bunch 2019-2020!

We will be offering 2 (60min) shifts throughout the lunch period. The first shift will be from 10:15-11:15am and the second shift is from 11:15-12:15, but we are flexible to the amount of time you can volunteer.

Help our kids open packages and help clean off the tables for the next class. This helps ensure our kids are eating at a clean table. Please consider volunteering and helping out DES children.
